‘The Camp in the Oatfield’
This site introduces ten oil paintings by Victor Tardieu (1870-1937)
which record the tented field hospital established and run by
Millicent, Duchess of Sutherland (1867-1955) at Bourbourg,
twelve miles south-west of Dunkirk, during the summer of 1915.
The paintings were given to the Duchess by the artist and have
descended through the Sutherland family. They were all
painted en plein air by Victor Tardieu (1870-1937) in oil on panels
measuring 8.5 x 10.75 inches. Each is signed, inscribed and dated.
The dedication on No.2 reads:
‘a Madame la Duchess M de Sutherland/Hommage
respecteux et tres reconnaisant/d’un simple soldat’.
